Frequently Asked Questions

How much mulch do I need for my project?

For most garden beds, we recommend a depth of 2-3 inches. This coverage is sufficient to suppress weeds and retain moisture without suffocating plant roots. Use this online calculator to estimate your exact needs based on square footage.

What's the difference between Hemlock, Black, Natural Brown, and Leaf Mulch?

Hemlock is naturally acidic—perfect for hydrangeas, rhododendrons, and blueberries. Black Mulch looks striking and lasts longer thanks to powder dye. Natural Brown breaks down faster, feeding your soil with organic matter. Leaf Mulch is nutrient-rich for flower beds and soil improvement. Choose based on your plants’ needs and your landscape’s aesthetic.

What's "mulch volcano" and should I worry?

Mulch volcano is when mulch is piled too high around tree trunks. This can cause rot, pest damage, and trunk decay. Instead, keep mulch 3-6 inches away from tree trunks and spread it 2-4 inches deep. Around shrubs, maintain a 3-4 inch gap from stems. Keep mulch away from the plant, not smothering it.

What's that yellow/orange stuff in my mulch?

That’s slime mold—it looks gross but won’t hurt your plants. It actually feeds on decaying matter and may help suppress harmful pathogens. If you want to remove it, rake it out or wait for it to dry up naturally.

Which mulch is best for my [hydrangeas / blueberries / vegetable garden]?

Hydrangeas and rhododendrons: Hemlock Mulch (naturally acidic). Blueberries: Hemlock or Leaf Mulch for extra nutrients. Vegetable gardens: Natural Brown or Leaf Mulch (breaks down faster, adds organic matter). Ornamental beds: Black Mulch for color and durability. In doubt? Call us at (978) 447-3446—we’ll recommend the right type.

When's the best time to apply mulch?

Spring (after soil warms) or Fall (before frost). Early spring mulching can trap cold in the ground and delay plant growth, so wait until soil temperatures rise. Fall mulching insulates plants before winter. You can apply mulch year-round, but these seasons are ideal.

How deep should mulch be?

New beds: 2-3 inches. Existing beds (refreshing): 1-2 inches. Around trees/shrubs: 2-4 inches. Vegetable gardens: 1-2 inches. Key: More isn’t better—too much causes rot and compaction.

Does mulch really suppress weeds?

Yes. A 3-inch layer blocks sunlight and prevents most weed seeds from germinating. Some deep-rooted perennial weeds may still push through, but a solid mulch bed dramatically reduces weeding. Combined with pulling initial weeds before mulching, you’ll see a big difference.

Do I need landscape fabric under mulch?

Not necessary. Good news: solid mulch alone (3+ inches) suppresses weeds effectively without fabric. Fabric can trap moisture and eventually break down, requiring replacement. Save your money and skip it—just apply mulch thick enough.

How often do I need to replace mulch?

It depends on type. Black Mulch lasts 12-18 months. Hemlock and Natural Brown last 6-12 months (they decompose faster). In year two, you usually only need to add 1-2 inches to refresh color and function, not replace everything. Leaf Mulch breaks down quickly—plan on annual refreshment.

Can I order mulch year-round?

Yes. We deliver next-day in Middlesex County and 2-4 days in extended zones. Spring and Fall are peak seasons—expect standard lead times. Winter delivery available but slower due to weather. Call (978) 447-3446 for current availability.
